  • How much is your personal identity worth?

Tech security leader Symantec just released their annual Internet Security Report. One section I found very interesting was about the top 10 items for sale in the Internet underground. Basically these are the personal identity items being stolen from you and sold on the black market.

Not surprisingly, credit card and bank info are numbers 1 and 2. However, seeing email accounts fetch $1-$18 was a surprise. For cyber-criminals this is very lucrative as they can go to a small, unsecured site, and easily make off with 1,000 emails ($1,000-$18,000). Imagine the damage they could do on a large site?

This is why all sites, big and small, need to set up defenses. NuCaptcha is a first line in defense on identity theft, as it will ensure bots are kept away from registering on a site.

The rest of the report is quite in-depth covering a range of topics including threat activity, fraud, malicious code, and vulnerability. They also give best practices for enterprises and consumers. In addition, instead of having to download the huge PDF, you can build your own report, thus only viewing the sections most important to you.
